My Teaching Philosophy

​

"For my soul delighteth in the song of the heart; yea, the song of the righteous is a prayer unto me, and it shall be answered with a blessing upon their heads” (Doctrine and Covenants 25:12)

I believe in teaching individuals—not curriculums. Each student has unique abilities, tendencies, inclinations, etc. I want my students to delight in the music they create. Yes, developing any skill requires hard work and sacrifice, but I believe work and sacrifice can be joyful.

I believe in learning by doing. When a student learns theory and technique within the context of a piece of music, the theory and technique will stick more readily than when they are taught out of context.

I believe in using music to serve others. I will provide service opportunities for my students and encourage them to seek out these opportunities themselves.

I believe my role as a teacher is to inspire, instruct, correct and commend. The student’s role is to put in the hard work of showing up, seeking to understand, and practicing their art.
